چکیده

Aneurysms arising from the petrous part of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are exceedingly uncommon. Only 21 angiographically proven cases have appeared in the literature [1-6) . The CT appearance of these rare lesions has not previously been reported. In the two cases described here, the CT pattern closely resembles that of the more common petrous apex meningioma. Consideration of a petrous carotid aneurysm, when confronted with a lesion in the subtemporal region on CT scan , may have important therapeutic implications. The presence of such an aneurysm may be easily confirmed by angiographic study, averting the possibility of an ill-advised surgical procedure. Cerebral angiography is crucial to a definitive diagnosis. The precise location of the petro us aneurysms in these instances, as well as coexistence of other aneurysms at more common sites, supports the hypothesis that many intrapetrous aneurysms are congenital and develop at the site of origin of an embryologic artery.

Otologic manifestations of petrous carotid aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The petrous and cavernous segments of the extradural internal carotid artery take a complex course through the skull base before entering the subarachnoid space distal to the cavernous sinus. Despite the protection from trauma afforded by the anatomy, the petrous and carotid internal carotid artery (ICA) segments of the vessel remains subject to disease, the most importan...

Ruptured internal carotid artery aneurysm presenting with bloody otorrhoea and epistaxis as a result of ear syringing.

136 To the Editor: We would like to record an unusual presentation of rupture of an internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm with carotido-tympanic leak presenting as a middle ear mass, profuse bloody otorrhoea and anterior and posterior epistaxis, resulting from the minor trauma of ear syringing for impacted wax. This is a rare major complication from a very minor procedure. A 32-year-old man wi...

An internal carotid aneurysm in the petrous temporal bone.

Intracranial aneurysms have received much attention and provoked the interest of many investigators since Biumi of Milan described a case in 1765, a full account of which was later published by Sandifort in 1778. Out of 559 cases of intracranial aneurysms reported in the literature by von Hofmann (1894), Wichern (1912), Fearnsides (1916), Busse (1920-21), Drennan (1921), Szekely (1928), and Ham...

Aneurysms of the petrous portion of the internal carotid artery.

Aneurysms of the petrous portion of the internal carotid artery are rare lesions. One case is reported here and 18 others have been found in the literature. These lesions usually arise in young men who present with auditory dysfunction. The aneurysm is usually discovered as a pulsating purple mass in the middle ear and mistaken for a glomus jugulare tumor. A definitive diagnosis can be made by ...
